Derrick Updegraff

     Derrick Updegraff was born in April 1813 at Level Corner, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of George Updegraff and Elizabeth [—?—]. Derrick Updegraff married, at age 22, Orpha Ann Stubbs on Sunday, 26 July 1835 at Shelby County, Indiana.1 Derrick Updegraff married Martha [—?—] circa 1854.1 Derrick Updegraff died on 6 June 1897 at Hennessey, Oklahoma Territory, USA, at age 84 years and 2 months.1 He was buried in the Medicine Lodge Cemetery, located in Barber County, Kansas.1
     He was Justice of the Peace. He Derrick came from Lycoming County, Pennsylvania with his parents about 1830, to Shelby County, Indiana. He is found in the 1850 Census for Brandywine Township, Shelby County and his father George is living with them. About 1852 he removed to Tecumseh Township, Shawnee County, Kansas and in 1869 was granted authority to maintain a ferry for ten years on Section 23, Township 11, Range 16. Around 1853 they were living in Iowa when their daughter was born. In the 1870's he moved his family to Medicine Lodge, Barbour County, Kansas where he became a Justice of the Peace and was known as the 'Judge'. He also operated a hotel there and is found in the 1880 Census at North Main St., Medicine Lodge, and a step-daughter is living with them - Laura Widner, born about 1853 in Iowa, widow of ? Widner.
