Albert S. Updegraff was born circa 1848 at Indiana.1 He was the son of Derrick Updegraff and Orpha Ann Stubbs. Albert S. Updegraff died in 1883 at Dodge City, Ford County, Kansas.1
He Al was a deputy sheriff, Hutchison, KS and an assistant Marshall in 1879.
He was also a stagecoach driver, then a barkeep at the Gay Lady Saloon, Dodge
City, KS, owned by Pat Masterson and A. Peacock. On 19 April 1881 'Bat'
Masterson, Pat's brother, bushwacked Al Updegraff in a gun battle and shot Al
in the chest, of which he later recoved. Pat and 'Bat' were then run out of
town by the authorities. Al later died from Smallpox. He was Sheriff.
