Martin Updegraff was born on 27 May 1765 at York County, Province of Pennsylvania, America. He was the son of Derrick Updegraff and Susan Stricker. Martin Updegraff married Mary Dunn, daughter of William Dunn and Sallie McKinstry, circa 1790 at Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. Martin Updegraff married Rebecca [—?—] circa 1813. Martin Updegraff died in 1843 at Shelby County, Indiana, at age 77 years.
He Martin removed from York county PA about 1787, and in 1790 census he shows up living in Northumberland county, PA with 3 males 16 years or older, 2 males under 16 years and 1 female. In 1800 he is listed in the Lycoming county, PA, List of Taxables - Farmer, 1800 census - Lycoming township, Lycoming county, PA and again in 1810 same place, also 1820. Sometime between 1820 - 1840 he removed to Shelby county, Indiana where he appears in the 1840 census - Hendrick township, Shelby county, Indiana. Martin owned land at 'Level Corner' now located in Lycoming county (was Northumberland county until 1800) which he inherited from his father's wll of 1815.
WILL - Shelby county, IN, Court - Probate Order Book 1845 - 1847 page 276, also page 540 Shelby county IN, Court - Probate Order Book A - 1836 - 1842; also Shelby county, IN, Probate Order Book 1830 - 1845, page 693; and in 'Will Records of Shelby County, IN 1822 - 1906', by Maurice Holmes. Will is dated 12/15/1838, filed 12/31/1839, in which he names sons Daniel and Martin, Jr., youngest daughter Merib, wife of Squire Parker, son-in-law Edward Toner, daughter Rebecca Cooper, Elizabeth Stubbs; Martin, son of deceased son Joseph; Harrison, son of deceased Derrick and children of Washington, deceased. 78. An act to establish a public ferry on the north side of the West Branch of the Susquehanna river, in Lycoming county. That MARTIN UPDEGRAFF, shall have the right at his own costs to make a convenient landing on the estate of Martin Updegraff, situate on the great road leading from the town of Dunnsburg, (laid out on the land of Updegraff) above the head of the great Island, to JOHN MYER's in Lycoming county. 26 March 1808.
