     Sarah Elizabeth Foresman was born on 11 April 1914 at Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1 She was the daughter of John Hammond Foresman and Julia Emery. Sarah Elizabeth Foresman first married, at age 27, J. Southgate Y. Hoyt on Thursday, 5 March 1942 at Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York.2 Sarah Elizabeth Foresman married a second time, at age 50, Walter R. Spofford, son of George Rawson Spofford and Mildred Peck, on Monday, 2 November 1964 at Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.2
     Sarah received her B.A. from Wilson College in 1935, her M.S. from the University of PA in 1936 and her PhD from Cornell University in 1948.
