A letter to Catherine Ann (Dehaven) Shockey
Connelsville, Pa. April 20, 1894
Mrs. Catherine Shockey
Dear Cousin,
Your letter was received some time ago. I am sorry I did not answer sooner, but I am very busy. I have so much writing to do and only the evenings to do it in. Yes, Uncle William of Addison is still living but he is in very poor health. I don't know how old my grandfather was. Uncle William has his age. I understand from your letter that Wm. DeHaven of Wellersburg was your father. He was a first cousin to my father. We wrote to the Reformed Preacher B. Kneppe of Wellersburg and he did not remember anything about the record in that bible but he said his wife knew that Daniel Dehaven's father was william. We have been investigating and we find that his Jacob Dehaven that loaned the money had no children. This Jacob that loaned the monley had three brothers and one sister. Peter Dehaven, one of the brother's of this Jacob that loaned the money, was my Great-Great Grandfather. William Dehaven, the son of Peter was my Great Grandfather. Jacob Dehaven, son of William was my Grandfather and my father's name was Benjamin. My Grandfather had two brothers and one sister named Daniel, William and Mary, Daniel being your Grandfather. When is your husband coming to Pennsylvania? About all of the heirs have sent Power of Attorney to Anderson, Doan and O'Neall. Well I will bring this letter to a close, Hoping to hear from you again.
Yours Very Respectfully
Joseph Dehaven Connellsville, Fayette C., Pa.
(Relationships claimed in this letter have to be a little suspect because this was at a time when another claim for the Dehaven money was being pressed and every Dehaven was trying to claim relationship to Jacob.)
