Dennis DeHaven was born on 14 May 1836 at Wellersburg, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of William S. DeHaven and Eleanor Harden. Dennis DeHaven married, at age 20, Sarah C. Johnson, age 18 on Wednesday, 8 October 1856 at Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Dennis DeHaven died on 19 October 1864 at Little Cacapon, Hampshire County, West Virginia, at age 28 years, 5 months and 5 days.
He was a Union soldier during the Civil War having been enrolled on 16 September 1861 in Cumberland, Maryland, to serve three years in the 2nd Maryland Potomac Home Brigade. Dennis was killed in a railroad accident on 19 October 1864 on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad near Little Cacapon, West Virginia.
