Isaac Updegrove1

M, (1751 - 1797)
Isaac Updegrove was born in 1751.1 He was the son of Jacob Updegrove and Sarah Butler.1 Isaac Updegrove married Elinor Ellis, age 24 in May 1777.1 Isaac Updegrove died in 1797 at age 46 years.1
He was a carpenter.1      The Pennsylvania Society of the National Society Sons of the American Revolution has given the following records to the above Isaac of Dauphin Co,
Pennsylvania:

Isaac Updegrove was an American Patroit and signed the Oath of Allegiance on 1 August 1778 in Berks County, State of Pennsylvania, as shown by affidavit
herewith from the genealogist, Mrs. Aimee Devine Sanders, of the Berks County Historical Society; Photostatic copy of a letter from Miss Jessica C. Ferguson, Genealogical Librarian, Department of Public Instruction, State Library, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania setting forth that Mr. Clyde Updegraff Shank, of Harrisburg, Pennsyllvania, has made search in connection with the Updegrove-Updegraff families and is a careful, reliable and conscientious researcher, herewith. Affidavit from Mr. Clyde Updegraff Shank, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to the effect that Clarence Ray Rupp, father of Clarence Ray Rupp, Jr., is a direct descendant of the said Isaac Updegrove, the American Patroit, of Berks County, Pennsylvania. - SAR National #82823 and Pennsylvania State #5351 for Clarence Ray Rupp and SAR National #88680 for Clarence Ray Rupp, Jr. 9 April 1962.

June Shaull Lutz, the author of the History of the Op Den Graeff/Updegraff Family, does not wish to cause a problem, but this record is for Isaac out of
Berks County, Pennsylvania and could well belong to another Isaac who was the son of John and Elizabeth (Benfield) Updegrove who were from Berks County,
Pennsylvania. The Isaac, son of Jacob and Sarah (Butler) Updegrove was out of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, not Berks County and this is the reason that
June Lutz questions just which Isaac is the one given the above SAR record. There are two Isaacs listed in the 1790 census - one for Dauphin County with
1-Male over 16, 2-Male under 16 and 3-Female, whereas the other one is for Northumberland County (which was formed in 1772 from Berks, Bedford and
Lancaster Counties) with 1-Male over 16, 3-Male under 16 and 5-Female. Dauphin County was formed in 1785 from Lancaster County, and Lancaster County was
formed in 1729 from Chester County, which is the county that the above Isaac's parents, Jacob and Sarah (Butler) Updegrove resided. She is of the opinion that
the two Isaac's records have become intertwined by other researchers, which can very easily happen and is to be considered in the above SAR records.

The following Dauphin County, Pennsylvania records have been found and no doubt belong to Isaac, son of Jacob and Sarah (Butler) Updegrove.

1790 Census - Dauphin County, Pennsylvania - Isaac Updegrove - 1-Male over 16, 2-Male under 16 and 3-Female.

1800 and 1810 Census - Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania lists - Elinor, widow.1
