Sarah Ann Pence was born on 2 September 1831 at Shelbyville, Shelby County, Indiana.1 She was the daughter of Peter Pence and Susanna Updegraff. Sarah Ann Pence married, at age 18, Nathaniel L. Nail, age 20, son of John Nail and Martha Ray, on Thursday, 28 February 1850 at Shelbyville, Shelby County, Indiana.2 Sarah Ann Pence died on 25 February 1906 at Carlinville, Macoupin County, Illinois, at age 74 years, 5 months and 23 days.1 She was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery, located in Litchfield, Montgomery County, Illinois.1
