Joseph Updegraff was born on 16 June 1819 at Franklin County, Indiana.1 He was the son of William Dunn Updegraff and Nellie [—?—].1 Joseph Updegraff married, at age 24, Eliza Jane Miller, age 17, daughter of Alex Miller and Lucy Templeton, on Thursday, 8 February 1844 at Shelby County, Indiana.1 Joseph Updegraff died on 15 June 1898 at Hughes Township, Nodaway County, Missouri, at age 78 years, 11 months and 30 days.1 He was buried in the Swan Chapel Cemetery, located in Hughes Township, Nodaway County, Indiana.1
He was quite young, his family moved to Shelby County, Indiana, where he was reared. In 1854 they removed to Clark County, Illinois where he was a farmer and became a representative in 1858 in the state legislature. In 1864 they removed to Nodaway County, Missouri where he farmed and raised stock until 1878, when he was elected county treasurer and was re-elected in 1880; was a member of the state legislature from Nodaway County and was a Democrat. In 1850 he joined the Masonic fraternity and filled all the offices in the Blue Lodge, was also a member of the Independant Order of Odd Fellows Encampment. They purchased a farm in Monroe Township, Nodaway County, Missouri. Then in 1878 they sold the farm and moved to Maryville, Missouri. He and his family were members of the Methodist Church.
