John Shafer was the youngest child, and only son of Samuel B. and Mary Heim Shafer. He was born on August 5, 1891 in Imperial, Nebraska, after the family had moved there from Pennsylvania. Later, he returned to Pennsylvania with his parents and two sisters, Elizabeth and Mattie. He then moved to Ridgeway, Ontario, Canada, with the family about 1900.

As a young man John worked as a carpenter and later took over the home farm. He was active in the life of the Brethren in Christ Church, serving as church property trustee. John never married. John died June 19, 1961 and is
buried beside his parents in the cemetery adjoining the Bertie Brethren in Christ Church, Stevensville, Ontario, Canada.

His nephew, Arthur W. Heim, recalls: 'He was a very quiet man; industrious and entirely honest. He had a very deep religious conviction as evidenced by the fact that he left the balance of his estate to his church. He was very thrifty, almost to the point of denying himself the ordinary comforts of life. I had a lot of respect for him and considered John 'The salt of the earth'.' He was Farmer.
