John Carpenter1

John Carpenter was born in 1788 at Loyalsock, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of James Carpenter. John Carpenter married Mary Campbell, age 19, daughter of John Campbell and Elizbeth Stauts, on Tuesday, 4 March 1806 at Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.1 John Carpenter died on 3 July 1865 at Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, at age 77 years.2 He was buried in the Woodward Township Cemetery, located in Woodward Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.
He appeared on the census of 22 August 1860 in the household of Jesse Bowman Carpenter and Phoebe Ann Carpenter at Anthony Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.
In 1892 the "History of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania" was published, in which we find John's biography that was submitted to the book's editor, John F. Meginness. On pages 1075-1076, preserved for future generations we find the following:
John Carpenter, third son of James Carpenter, was born on the homestead farm in this county in 1788. He grew to manhood and cleared up a portion of the land upon which he afterward resided. He married Mary, daughter of John and Elizabeth Campbell, of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, March 4, 1806. She died August 6, 1847; he survived her until 1865. Their family consisted of the following children: Elizabeth, deceased wife of Andrew Marshall; David, of Jersey Shore, who twice married, first to Mary Ware, and afterwards to Rachael Mitcheltree; Priscilla, deceased wife of John Pepperman, deceased; Jesse B; Nancy, who died in infancy; Susan A., deceased wife of J. L. Rank; John J., of Iowa, who married Mary Marshall; William, who died in infancy, and Rebecca, deceased. In early life Mr. Carpenter was a Whig and subsequently a Republican.3
