     Commendable Industry

Editor of The Sun and Democrat.

We often hear through the press about the work of old lady's, here is something hard to beat. Mrs. Elizabeth Marshall, wife of Andrew Marshall, of Anthony Township, who is now in the 70th year of her age, and has been sorely afflicted in her head for eight years, has in the past three years pieced eighteen quilts, fifteen of which she has presented to her children and grand-children, and among the rest she has not forgotten the printer's wife with one that has 662 patches in it. Beside this, she has made a great many keep-sakes such as pin-cushions and needle books for her friends. The most remarkable feature is that most of the work has been done without the aid of glasses, and will bear inspection, for all is done very neatly and without the aid of a machine, and with all this she has never neglected the duties of a faithful wife and loving mother. I would say to you young ladies to do likewise, for the old are passing away, and the example of such is worthy of imitation.

Susan A. Hill

Note by the Editor - the fortunate recipient of the above named valuable present, is the wife of the Editor of his journal, who is a younger sister of Mrs. Marshall, and for which bequest, we return our united thanks.
Her obituary was published on 11 August 1880 in the Daily Gazette & Bulletin, printed in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Her obituary stated:

The funeral of Mrs. Elizabeth Marshall, wife of Andrew Marshall, Jr., of Anthony Township, took place yesterday afternoon from her late residence. The services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Konkle and Elder Casper and the internment was made in the graveyard at Emory church with many sorrowing friends present. Mrs. Marshall died, as has been stated, suddenly on Monday morning, in the 74th year of her age. She was the eldest daughter of John and Mary Carpenter and a sister of Mr. Jesse B. Carpenter of Piatt Township and of Mrs. Susan Tate, wife of Colonel I. I. Tate, of the Sun and Democrat. Through her long life in this world she sustained the character of a truly Christian lady, and her friends have the consolation of feeling that she has been taken by the Father to dwell among the blessed.
