This Joseph is believed by some researchers (and is most likely correct) to be the Joseph whose is referred to in some records as 'Joseph, Hatter of York County, Pennsylvania', but there are others who believe that 'Joseph the Hatter of York Co., PA was the son of Jacob Updegraff and Barbara Graybill/Sewell - this author cannot prove either claim, but I do tend to agree that 'Joseph the Hatter of York Co., PA' belongs to Joseph, son of Derick and Margaret (?) Updegraff because of the ages involved, I don't know if this difference will ever be proved, so for now, the following records are being placed here as being probably the records of this Joseph Updegraff:
In 1760, Abraham Updegraff [born 1746], son of Harman Updegraff came into Orphan's Court York County, Pennsylvania aged 14 years last February and chose William Willis of Monaghan Twp. as his guardian. Also came into Court William Willis, guardian of Abraham and asked that Abraham might be bound unto Joseph Updegraff, Hatter of Yorktown, PA - so this Joseph had to have been born at least sometime before 1735.
Joseph was a commissioner of York County, Pennsylvania for three years, 1st appointed in October of 1766. Reference: History of York County, Pennsylvania, 1834, by Glossbrenner.
The following tax lists and census records were found:

These are all presumed to be this Joseph son of Derick and Margaret (?) Updegraff.
