Clyde Metzger was the third of six sons of Jeremiah and Alice Metzger. Clyde left the farm to join the U. S. Army during World War 1. Sometime after joining up, the decision was made to send home young men who were farmers to help raise food. Clde, who was then an Army Cook, having been well trained by his mother Alice Metzger, returned home shortly before the war ended in 1918.

Shortly thereafter Clyde went into a business partnership with a gentleman named Bohannon. They opened an automobile agency, selling Reo passenger cars and trucks on Front Street in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The location was about one block wet of Market Street, very near the Susquehanna River.

Raymond Metzger, Clyde's youngest brother recalls that Clyde did his advertising by painting on his first company truck: 'I AM A REO SPEED WAGON, I DELIVER THE GOODS CHEAPER AND SUCCESSFULLY IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME, ASK MY DRIVER.' Clyde was such a good car salesman, that his father, Jeremiah Metzger, bought his first car in 1915. It was a five passenger Reo. In the winter, Jeremiah jacked up his Reo and waited till the muddy roads dried up. No Metzger drives around with mud on their tires! Later Clyde sold his dad a seven passenger Reo touring car and in 1928 he bought a Reo Flying Cloud from his son Clyde. Jeremiah Metzger must have been one of Clyde's best customers.

Clyde married Ruth Edna Williams Metzger who was born March 5, 1899. They had six children; however, one child died at birth.

Clyde and Ruth Metzger's living children are:
Robert Laverne, born September 20, 1923
Ruth Ann, born December 16, 1926
Marilyn Mae, born March 12, 1930
Mary Louise, born September 4,1932
Alice Elisabeth, born August 5, 1936

Clyde's business continued to be successful, and after a few years Clyde bought out his partner and the West Branch Motor Car Company began to grow and, move westward to West Third Street. The company survived the depression years of the late 20's and 30's, despite the relatively high cost of the Reo cars and trucks. However, Clyde decided in the early 30's to take on a dealership in DeSota and Plymouth cars, probably to gain a market in lower priced motor cars.

In 1936, REO discontinued their automobile manufacturing business. Clyde then took on Nash cars and Mack trucks, opening a special garage for the truck business. Always there seemed to be the farm boy blood in his veins, for a few years later, Cyde opened another place of business for J. I. Case farm machinery. He never seemed happier than when he was demonstrating a huge new Case tractor to a customer, while dressed, as always, impeccably in a business suit.

Throughout his life, Clyde Metzger was an avid sportsman. Enjoying both fishing and hunting, lie spent many happy days at the Pewterbaugh Hunting Club near Salladasburg, Pennsylvania, or on fishing trips to Canada.

On one occasion, he packed his bag in the car to leave with the group for Canada. His wife kissed him goodbye, and waved as they pulled away from the house. As she turned to go back in the front door, -she looked on the porch and saw Clyde's two favorite fishing rods still lying on the swing. She told the children to go on in the house and go about their business, for he'd be back soon and pick them up. Inside of an hour, they heard a car pull up at their house, and when they looked later, the rods were gone.

Clyde endured severe heart trouble the last ten years of his life. Although, this limited his business endeavor, it did not diminish his love for nature, outdoors, and the camaraderie he enjoyed with friends. His final heart attack came while fie was at the hunting club on Pewterbaugh Mountain and he died April 30, 1954. His wife, Ruth Metzger died in 1969.
