Thaddeus Stevens Updegraff

     Thaddeus Stevens Updegraff was born in 1839 at Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of John Updegrove and Ann Stephens.1 Thaddeus Stevens Updegraff married Ella Alice Hale, daughter of [—?—] Hale, in 1860.1 Thaddeus Stevens Updegraff died on 6 August 1885 at Elmira, Chemung County, New York, at age 46 years.1 He was buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery, located in Elmira, Chemung County, New York.1
     He was a surgeon.1 He and Ella Alice Hale appeared on the census of 1 June 1880 at Elmira, 5th Ward, Chemung County, New York.      Thaddeus organized the 26th Illinois Volunteers and was made Captain of his company, he served as Captain and surgeon of the organization during the Civil War. Afterwards he lived at Elmira, New York. He made a speciality of eye and ear difficulties. In 1872 he founded the surgical institute on Hudson Street, he was also instrumental in founding the Microscopical Society of Elmira, of which he was secretary at the time of his death. He was made a fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society of England. He was a surgeon for the Northern Central Railway, Medical Director of the Southern Tier Masonic Relief Association. He lived in Danville and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania before moving to Elmira, New York. Reference Elmira Gazette (New York) 6 August 1885.1
