     Joseph Adolphus Updegraff was born circa 1840. He was the son of John Updegrove and Ann Stephens.1 Joseph Adolphus Updegraff died in 1861.1 He was buried Elmira, Chemung County, New York.1
     He enlisted for service during the Civil War out of Elmira, New York and he was the first Elmira man to be killed and is buried in Elmira, New York.1
