John Updegrove1

M, (1812 - 1882)
     John Updegrove was born in 1812.1 He was the son of Jacob Updegrove and Martha Fowler.1 John Updegrove married Ann Stephens.1 John Updegrove died in 1882 at age 70 years.1
     A researcher, Mrs. Minnie Gertrude (Updegraff) Moore has done a lot of research on her family and claimed that this John as her ancestor. He is known as "John Jacob Updegraff" in her research. There has been no documentation to prove this, they also all spell their name "Updegraff" not "Updegrove."

     John answered Lincoln's first call for volunteers in 1861, he became a General, but was deprived of his rank and sword by General Grant. He enlisted at Elmira, New York. Later he resided with his family in Danville (Montour County), Selinsgrove (Snyder County) and Wilkes Barre (Luzerne County), Pennsylvania, and also in Flint, Michigan.1
