Martin George Updegraff was born on 2 January 1860 at Connersville, Fayette County, Indiana.1 He was the son of Francis Asbury Updegraff and Margaret J. Goble. Martin George Updegraff married, at age 25, Gertrude Elizabeth Cole, age 19 on Wednesday, 29 July 1885 at Alpena, Alpena County, Michigan.1 Martin George Updegraff died on 1 December 1946 at Alpena, Alpena County, Michigan, at age 86 years, 10 months and 29 days.1 He was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, located in Alpena, Alpena County, Michigan.1
After Martin's parents died, he lived with foster parents - L. W. and Betty Murray who had a grain elevator in Carson City, Michigan. After Martin left Carson City he worked as a tinsmith at Cadillac at Petoskey, Michigan. Moved to Alpena, Michigan about 1883 and worked for Potter Hardware for twelve years, then started a hardware store with H. G. Beach, then worked for B. R. Young Hardware until he was elected County Clerk, which he served from 1914 - 1928.
