Frances Eleanor Jacobs was born on 28 May 1920 at Wapakoneta, Auglaize County, Ohio.1,2 She married John Alfred Updegraff, son of John Clifford Updegraff and Caroline May Rhoads, in 1942.1,2 Frances Eleanor Jacobs died on 5 September 2015 at Bethany Lutheran Village, Centerville, Montgomery County, Ohio, at age 95 years, 3 months and 8 days.1,2 She was buried on 11 September 2015 in Section I, Lot 87, Space 4, in the David's Cemetery, located in Kettering, Montgomery County, Ohio. The funeral service was officiated by Reverend Robert Ashburn.2

She was born in 1920 - Frances E. Jacobs - in Wapakoneta, OH, where she grew up, was a member of First English Lutheran Church, and graduated from Blume High School in 1938. She graduated from Wittenberg (then) College in 1941 and went on to teach in the Piqua, OH public school system before marriage to the Rev. J. Alfred Updegraff in 1942. The couple served in Lutheran congregations in Paulding and Toledo, OH before Pastor Updegraff came to the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Oakwood, Dayton, OH in 1955, where he served until his retirement in 1980.
Mrs. Updegraff was active in the congregation's Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and Women's programs and the retired persons' group. She was a volunteer at Bethany Lutheran Village for years before the couple moved there in 1992, where she continued as a volunteer until recent years. Mrs. Updegraff was a substitute elementary school teacher and then full time, beginning in 1969 and continued until retirement in 1980 from the Dayton Public School System.
She is survived by two children, the Rev. James E. Updegraff and his wife Pat, of Springfield, OH, and the Rev. Ruth E. Smith of Greencastle, PA. There are four grandchildren, Kyle Bacon of Vienna, VA, Kristin Bacon of Big Lake, AK, Katherine Updegraff of Anchorage, AK, and Holly Kahwajy and her husband David Kahwajy of Mt. Airy, MD. There are two great grandchildren, Eleanor and Andrew Kahwajy.
The funeral will be at Bethany Lutheran Village in the auditorium at 10:30 am on Friday, September 11, 2015, with the Rev. Robert Ashburn presiding, and the burial will be at David's Cemetery. The family will receive callers one half hour prior to the service at Bethany Village.2
