John Alfred Updegraff was born on 13 December 1914.1 He was the son of John Clifford Updegraff and Caroline May Rhoads.1,3,2 John Alfred Updegraff married Frances Eleanor Jacobs in 1942.1,4 John Alfred Updegraff died on 28 June 2000 at Bethany Lutheran Village, Centerville, Montgomery County, Ohio, at age 85 years, 6 months and 15 days.1,4 He was buried on 3 July 2000 in the David's Cemetery, located in Kettering, Montgomery County, Ohio. The funeral service was officiated by Reverend Gary Eichhorn.1
As of 1939, John Alfred Updegraff was known as Reverend professionally.1 As of 1992, John Alfred Updegraff and Frances Eleanor Jacobs lived at Centerville, Montgomery County, Ohio.4 His obituary was published sometime in June 2000 in the local paper, printed in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. His obituary stated:
UPDEGRAFF, The Rev. J. Alfred, age 85 of Bethany Lutheran Village in Centerville, beloved husband, father, and grandfather and faithful servant of Christ died Wednesday, June 28, 2000.
He was Pastor Emeritus of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior. Alfred graduated from Wittenberg University in 1936, from Hamma School of Theology in 1939 and was ordained in 1940. He first served at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Paulding, Ohio and at Bethany Lutheran Church in Toledo, Ohio before coming to Dayton to serve at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Oakwood from 1955 until his retirement in 1980. He was active in and former president of the Lutheran Social Services of the Miami Valley and was involved in area scouting, in the Oakwood Y, and the Oakwood Kiwanis and with Trinity Seminary in Columbus. Alfred also served as Dean of the Southwest and Dayton Districts of the Lutheran Church for 12 years, was a member of the Board of Directors for Wittenberg University for 18 years and was appointed a Director Emeritis in 1988.
Survived by his wife of 58 years, Frances; a son, The Rev. James E. Updegraff of Napoleon, OH; a daughter, The Rev. Ruth E. Smith of Chambersburg, PA; 4 grandchildren: Kyle Bacon, Holly Kahwajy, Kristin Bacon and Katherine Updegraff; and also several cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, July 3 at the Lutheran Church of our Savior, 155 E. Thruston Blvd., Oakwood with Rev. Gary Eichhorn officiating. Burial is in David's Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 4-6:00 P.M., Sunday in the Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering and from 1-2:00 P.M. at the church on Monday. If desired, contributions may be made to the Updegraff Seminary Scholarship Fund, c/o The Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 155 E. Thruston Blvd., Oakwood, Ohio 45419.1
