Joseph Morrison was born on 7 September 1791 at York County, Province of Pennsylvania, America.1 He was the son of Samuel Morrison and Mary Magdalene Ann Updegraff. Joseph Morrison married, at age 20, Sarah Tedrow, age 17, daughter of Reuben Tedrow and Jane Leech, on Tuesday, 24 September 1811.1 Joseph Morrison died on 13 September 1869 at Trenton, Henry County, Iowa, at age 78 years and 6 days.1
Joseph was a Justice of the Peace for 15 years in Pennsylvania. He disposed of his Pennsylvania property and in April of 1838 removed to Jerseyville, Athens County, Ohio, where he visited his daughter Mary Ann. He then traveled by boat to Quincy, Illinois in December of 1838 and found a suitable claim of 160 acres, eventually owning 2000 acres, was hence known as 'Squire' Morrison, Trenton Township, Henry County, Iowa. Joseph was a Whig and aided in the formation of the Republican Party in this county. His wife Sarah was an ardent Methodist and was one of the people who helped to organize the church at Trenton.1 He and Sarah Tedrow appeared on the census of 3 September 1850 at Trenton Township, Henry County, Iowa.
