     George Clarence Backus was born on 7 September 1891 at West Virginia.1 He was the son of Cornelius Dorsey Backus and Cynthia Hill.1 George Clarence Backus first married Georgia E. Hill, daughter of Walter R. Hill and Ada [—?—] (w/Walter R. Hill), in 1915.1 George Clarence Backus married a second time, at age 40, Elizabeth Bethel Hale, age 21 on Friday, 18 December 1931.1 George Clarence Backus died on 14 May 1978 at Bluefield, Mercer County, West Virginia, at age 86 years, 8 months and 7 days.1
