Cornelius Dorsey Backus was born on 3 August 1863 at Belva, Nicholas County, West Virginia.1 He was the son of George Washington Backhouse and Mariah Manifield Dorsey.1 Cornelius Dorsey Backus married, at age 22, Cynthia Hill, age 18, daughter of David Moses Hill and Martha Rigg, on Sunday, 28 February 1886 at Belva, Nicholas County, West Virginia.1 Cornelius Dorsey Backus died on 18 May 1947 at age 83 years, 9 months and 15 days.2 He was buried in the Vaughan Cemetery, located in Nicholas County, West Virginia.2
