Lavern Thomas Metzger1

M, (23 March 1904 - 28 November 1994)
     Lavern Thomas Metzger was born on 23 March 1904 at Linden, Woodward Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.2,1 He was the son of Jeremiah Matthew Metzger and Alice Catherine Hetner. Lavern Thomas Metzger first married Helen McGlaughlin circa 1928. Lavern Thomas Metzger married a second time Elsie Pearl McGrain circa 1932. Lavern Thomas Metzger died on 28 November 1994 at Roseview Manor, Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, at age 90 years, 8 months and 5 days.1 He was buried on 1 December 1994 in the State Road United Methodist Church Cemetery, located in Lycoming Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.
     He was a chef in a local restaurant in 1955. LA VERN THOMAS METZGER

     LaVern T. Metzger was Jeremiah and Alice Metzger's fifth son to be born on the Mansion Farm. He farmed with his father and brother Raymond until he left the farm to seek other employment. He had great expertise in cooking, which he had learned fom his mother, Alice Metzger. He was a cook for the 331 Training Detachment of the Army Air Corp. in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

     LaVern married Helen McGlaughlin Metzger and after the birth of their daughter, Mary Elizabeth, she died.

     While working as a chef at Lycoming College, in Williamsport, LaVern met and married Elsie McGrain Mills Metzger. Elsie had a son, Kenneth Mills, who now lives in Brookville, Florida. In 1944, LaVern, Elsie, and Mary Elizabeth Metzger moved to Sring Valley, New York, where LaVern was a chef at The Lakeside School. They continued to visit the Mansion Farm during the summer while on vacation. Mary Elizabeth enjoyed riding on the hay wagons and playing with the ducks and cats.

     Even as a young boy, LaVern was an excellent hunter. When his father and brothers went hunting LaVern always got the most squirrels. He has a love for nature and enjoys watching things grow. He enjoys transplanting and planting pine and hemlock trees, ferns and flowers. 'Once a-farmer, always a farmer.' Every year during hunting season, LaVern would return to Mansion Farm to go deer hunting and also enjoyed hunting in Rose Valley.

     Mary Elizabeth is married to Jerry Bell and they have two children, Karen Renee and Brian LaVern. They live in Woodbridge, Virginia.

     LaVern and Elsie made many trips to Florida to visit Kenneth Mills and enjoyed traveling with their dear friends John and Rose Ulmer and Rev. Clarence and Elsie Getz.

     LaVern and Elsie Metzger retired in 1972 after 28 years of service to the Lakeside School in Spring Valley, New York. They were members of the Baptist church in Spring Valley and now LaVern is an active member of the Anthony Baptist Church in Anhony Township. LaVern and Elsie established their retirement home near the site of the original 'Bush Meetings' on Mansion Farm.

     LaVern is still a loyal fan of the New York Yankee Baseball team and enjoys watching all sports on T. V. He attends the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania every year.2
