Smith Tillis was born on 1 June 1845 at Virginia. He was the son of Richard Tillis and Elizabeth Greenlee VanBibber. Smith Tillis married, at age 19, Jane Ann McCoy, age 19 on Friday, 22 July 1864 at Gallia County, Ohio. Smith Tillis died on 9 November 1918 at Plymouth, Putnam County, West Virginia, at age 73 years, 5 months and 8 days.
