Elizabeth Tillis was born on 7 May 1873 at Pocatalico, Putnam County, West Virginia. She was the daughter of Smith Tillis and Jane Ann McCoy. Elizabeth Tillis married, at age 18, Riley Todd Sayre, age 18, son of William Henry Sayre and Caroline Barnett, on Friday, 15 January 1892 at Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio. Elizabeth Tillis died on 6 April 1952 at Carbondale, Fayette County, West Virginia, at age 78 years, 10 months and 30 days.
She was widowed at age 69 by the death of Riley on 11 December 1942.
