Aquilla Lovell
M, (28 March 1807 - 16 September 1881)
Aquilla Lovell was born on 28 March 1807 at Tioga County (?), Pennsylvania. He was the son of William A. Lovell. Aquilla Lovell married, at age 28, Jane Martin, age 20, daughter of William Martin and Mary Welch, on Thursday, 10 September 1835. Aquilla Lovell died on 16 September 1881 at age 74 years, 5 months and 19 days. He was buried in the Woodward Township Cemetery, located in Woodward Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.
As a young man Aquilla Lovell was an iron worker with a yearning for adventure. He learned of an Iron Foundry located near Williamsport on Lycoming Creek, where a shopping center is now located, he walked from his home in Tyoga [Tioga] County to obtain work in the Iron Foundry here. We do not know when, since the Indians didn't build roads and there was no Pony Express in this area. There were iron mines east of Larry's Creek in the Larryville area that could have supplied the iron ore for the foundry. It would seem to be logical reasoning that this is how Aquilla met the beautiful Jane Martin whose home was in the direct line of travel from Larryville to the Lycoming Foundry. He and Jane Martin were married and set up house keeping near his work. Several children were born to them and when Lorenzo was nine years old, Aquilla bought the tract of land in Anthony Township, Lycoming County containing nearly 200 acres, all timber. They moved to the new home and lived in a two room log cabin already on the land. The tract was all forest so Aquilla continued to work at the Foundry, walking to and from a distance of some 12 miles, as the crow flies, to spend short periods of time with his family. Later with the help of neighbors and friends enough timber was cut, burned and the land was put into shape for farming. He then built a larger more comfortable home and embarked on his new career as a farmer. The original log cabin in which they lived, while not on the same site is still standing on the farm. Aquilla Lovell was an iron worker and farmer in 1845. He and Jane Martin appeared on the census of 20 August 1860 at Anthony Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.
