Joseph Ritner Updegrove was born in 1838 at Ohio.1 He was the son of Thomas F. Updegrove and Margaret Blair.1 Joseph Ritner Updegrove married Elmira O. Quick in 1864.1 Joseph Ritner Updegrove died in 1890 at age 52 years.1
He appeared on the census of 11 September 1850 in the household of Thomas F. Updegrove and Margaret Blair at Wayne Township, Wayne County, Ohio.2 Joseph went to the blacksmith trade at the age of 15. Then in April of 1861 he enlisted for service in the Union Army of the Civil War and served almost 5 years. He enlisted in Company E, 15th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Later he was promoted to Orerly Sargent and then to 1st Lt. on 26 May 1862. He was wounded at Chickamauga on 19 September 1863 where he lost an eye and was hit in the chest. On 21 November 1863 he was promoted to Captain. He was wounded again in 1864 at Pickett's Mill, Georgia, where 39 were killed, including his brother James Lewis. He was appointed sheriff of Van Wert County, Ohio, when the current sheriff Lewis Evans died. Then in 1865 he was elected for a full term. In 1869 they moved to Union Township. He and his wife had 4 children. He was commonly known as "Writ" to family and friends.2 Joseph Ritner Updegrove and Elmira O.
