George Covode Updegraff

     George Covode Updegraff was born on 25 November 1852 at Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of Uriah Updegraff and Ann Covode. George Covode Updegraff married, at age 29, Florence Ross, age 17, daughter of David Ross, on Wednesday, 18 October 1882 at Allington, Reno County, Kansas.1
     George and his family located at Hiawatha, Kansas about January of 1873, seven months later they moved to Springfield, Missouri, then in March of 1874 they gain moved, this time to Bell Township, Reno County, Kansas. Here George began a mercantile business at Nickerson 12 May 1881 and on 12 January 1882 his brother Robert joined him in that business. On the 7th of March that same year they moved to Hutchinson, Kansas. George was a member of the I.O.O.F. Reference: History of Kansas Vol. 8; pp. 119 and 122.1
