John Kiess was born on 16 March 1822 at Hepburn Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John Kiess and Elizabeth Seamiller. John Kiess married Mary Koch, daughter of George Koch and Barbara Sweeley, circa 1848.1 John Kiess died on 10 May 1895 at Whetstone Township, Crawford County, Ohio, at age 73 years, 1 month and 24 days.
