Frederick Ulmer Stabler was born on 11 July 1907 at farm of Pierce Albert Stabler, Anthony Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1,2 He was the son of Pierce Albert Stabler and Mary Elizabeth Ulmer. Frederick Ulmer Stabler married, at age 32, Zella Elvira Lovell, age 24, daughter of David Watson Lovell and Mary Elizabeth Alexander, on Wednesday, 12 June 1940 at Saint John's Chapel Evangelical United Brethren Church, Anthony Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.4,5 Frederick Ulmer Stabler died on 15 August 2005 at Williamsport Home, Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, at age 98 years, 1 month and 4 days.1,2,4 He was buried on 18 August 2005 in the Wildwood Cemetery, located in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. The funeral service was officiated by Reverend Norman E. Huff and Reverend Mark F. Reisinger.1
Frederick Ulmer Stabler was Sewage Inspection - Anthony, Woodward, Piatt, Mifflin, Cummings, McHenry, and Lycoming Townships, Salladasburg. Fred is currently an active member of the Salladasburg United Methodist Church which he has been a member since 1961. Before that he and Zella were members at Saint John's Chapel. He is also a member of the Poor Shot Hunting Club which was founded in 1924. He joined in 1934 and has been a member ever since, receiving an honorary life membership in 1984. He enjoys hunting, fishing and woodworking. He has hunted all types of game in Pennsylvania and been able to kill all, but the bear still eludes him to this day. He still maintains the original farm that was purchased by George in 1830 on which he and his wife Zella still live in the home that was built in 1854. He still hunts during deer season and enjoys splitting fire wood for the fireplace. He is a loyal Democrat in politics.

Neither snow nor rain nor sleet nor ice could stop Mr. and Mrs. Frederick U. Stabler, residing north of Salladasburg, from contributing to the Williamsport Hospital Fund. Fearing that the solicitor would be unable to get through the snow to their farm, they drove 30 miles round trip to Williamsport yesterday to see Roy C. Peterman, whom they had read in The Sun was vice chairman of the residential canvass, and gave him their gift of $15.00.

MR., MRS. STABLER TO OBSERVE 25TH ANNIVERSARY
Mr. and Mrs. Fred U. Stabler, Salladasburg RD 1, will observe their 25th wedding anniversary Saturday when a family dinner will be held in observance of the occasion.
The couple was married in the chapel of Saint John's Evangelical United Brethren Church, Linden, by the Rev. B. G. Hoffman. Mrs. Stabler is the former Zella Lovell.
The Stablers have a daughter, Mrs. Leonard P. Sholder, Pleasant Gap, and a son, Daniel, at home. They have two grandsons.
Active members of Salladasburg Methodist Church, the couple operates a farm at Salladasburg RD 1.

COUPLE TO MARK 50TH ANNIVERSARY
Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Stabler, Jersey Shore RD 3, will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on Tuesday, June 12. They were married by the Rev. Benjamin G. Hoffman in a private ceremony at Saint John's Chapel Evangelical United Brethren Church, Linden, now a United Methodist congregation.
The former Zella Lovell, Mrs. Stabler is a native of Linden. Mr. Stabler, a Salladasburg native, is a retired farmer. The couple have lived at the same farm for 50 years.
They are the parents of Nancy Sholder, Lebanon, Ohio, and Daniel, Cogan Station, and have five grandchildren.
The Stablers will be honored at an open reception in fellowship hall of the Salladasburg United Methodist Church from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 10. They are members of that church. He was Dairy Farmer at Sunset Haven. He and Zella Elvira Lovell lived at RD #3, Box 156 (Jobs Run Road), Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, between 1940 and 2000. From the records of the Stabler Family, and from the stories that were related to me by my father Pierce Stabler, my sister Margaret Bair, my grandfather Abraham Stabler and several of my aunts and uncles. Also from my own memory. The records were taken from the 'Stammbaum Waldchen' family tree, now the property of my son Daniel. Johann Michael Stäbler was born on 8 Jan 1770, Leinfelden, Neckarkrers, Wuerttemberg, Germany and married Anna Katharina Heimerdinger on 26 Aug 1795, she was born on 18 Oct 1771. I have no evidence that they ever came to America. They were my paternal ancestors. Their son Ulrich Stäbler, born 4 Jul 1810, settled in the Balls Mill or Warrensville area. Another son Johann Jacob Stäbler, born 9 Oct 1805, went west to the Wisconsin area. Johann Michael Stäbler (Jr.), born 19 May 1798, and his wife Anna Margaret Herr and family moved from Pennsylvania to Niles Township, Floyd County, Iowa about May of 1856. And Johann George Stäbler, born 11 Mar 1800, who was my Great Grandfather. I have no record of their port of entry to this country.
It is rather difficult to comprehend the heartache of sorrow, and emotional stress that they endured leaving family and friends, never to see them again in this world. It surely took a strong faith in God to face the long and dangerous journey across the sea to desire and be able to establish a home in this land of the free, and home of the brave.
On 23 May 1830 George Stäbler purchased 100 acres of land known as the Ellis tract for $200.00. It was necessary for him to settle west of a north/south line that extended from the mountain to the Susquehanna river in order to purchase only 100 acres. Land east of this line was sold in much larger tracts of land. The land he purchased was virgin forest and had to be cleared for farming, which was a very gradual process. As my grandfather Abraham and father Pierce, continued to clear the land until about 1914. George built his first small cabin, near what is now our concrete spring house.
The boards used for the door of this cabin, George had to carry eight or ten miles on his back from the Balls Mill area as this was the closest saw mill. This log cabin was a single room large enough for a small family to live in. His nearest neighbors lived about one mile to the south near what is now Saint Johns Episcopal Chapel. He traveled there on a wooded trail to have his bread baked. It was related to me that while he would travel this trail at night that wild animals, such as panthers or wolves, would travel parallel with him just off the trail in the woods. There were, fortunately, no close calls.
Great grandfather George was not known to be a hunter, but he did own a flint lock gun that I have given to my son Dan. Abraham was also not a hunter, but owned a cap lock gun which is in operable condition and of which Dan also has. As of 2003, Frederick Ulmer Stabler and Zella Elvira Lovell lived at 360 Girio Terrace, Apt. #1, Williamsport, Pennsylvania. His obituary was published on 17 August 2005 in the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, printed in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. His obituary stated:
Fred U. Stabler, 98, a devout Christian, of 360 Girio Terrace, South Williamsport, and formerly of Salladasburg, died Monday, August 15, 2005 at the Williamsport Home. He and his wife, the former Zella E. Lovell, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on June 12.
Born July 11, 1907 in Salladasburg, he was the son of Pierce Albert and Mary Elizabeth (Ulmer) Stabler. He was a lifelong resident of Lycoming County and a descendant of several of the county’s pioneer settlers. He had worked on the family dairy farm on Job’s Run Road in Anthony Township until his retirement in 1969.
They lived on the farm until October of 2000 at which time they moved to South Williamsport.
He was a member of Third Street United Methodist Church, and a former member of St. John’s Chapel and Salladasburg United Methodist Churches. He and Zella were active in the Senior Citizens group in Salladasburg and the Pine Run Grange. Fred was past president of the Salladasburg Cemetery. He was a member of the Poor Shot Hunting Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter Nancy E. (Leonard) Sholder of Lebanon, Ohio and a son Daniel L. (Linell) Stabler of Cogan Station; five grandchildren, Kevin (Loa), Kent and Timothy (Teri) Sholder, Kerri (Todd) Girton, and Kurt Stabler; three great-grandchildren, four step great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son George William (1945) and sister Margaret Bair (1980).
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Third Street United Methodist Church, 931 E. Third St., Williamsport, with the Revs. Mark F. Reisinger and Norman E. Huff officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorials be given to the American Cancer Society, 1848 E. Third St., Williamsport PA 17701.6 According to the Social Security Administrations Death Index Frederick's last known residence was Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.2
