James Updegraff was born in May 1864 at Montoursville, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of Joseph Updegraff and Mary Slaughenwhite. James Updegraff first married, at age 22, Annie Sherman, daughter of W. T. Sherman and Catherine [—?—], on Saturday, 16 October 1886 at Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, by the Reverend Jacob Reed.1 James Updegraff married a second time, at age 33, Jane O. Wright, age 23, daughter of Oliver Cornwall Wright and Sarah Jane Kisner, on Wednesday, 8 September 1897 at Montoursville, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, by the Reverend W. L. Rutherford.1 James Updegraff was buried in the Montoursville Cemetery, located in Montoursville, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1
He was farmer and sawmill operator in 1899 at Fairfield Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.
