Charles Updegraff was born on 5 November 1840 at Indiana.1 He was the son of John Updegraff and Catherine Baker. Charles Updegraff married, at age 25, Mary Kendall on Wednesday, 26 September 1866 at Shelby County, Indiana.1 Charles Updegraff married, at age 31, Lizzie Miller, age 17, daughter of William Miller and Harriett Davisson, on Sunday, 15 September 1872 at Shelby County, Indiana.1 Charles Updegraff died on 17 July 1918 at age 77 years, 8 months and 12 days.1 He was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, located in Shelby County, Indiana.1
He fought in the Civil War in the Union Army Company K, 42nd Indania Infantry, he enlisted on 17 September 1864 and was discharged on 8 June 1865. He and his
family lived in Johnson County, Indiana, then removed to Shelby County, Indiana and are listed in the 1870 and 1880 census for Hendricks Township, Shelby County, Indiana.
