Mary McErn was born on 8 February 1891. She has also been reported to have been born 8 February 1898. She married Howard Grimes, son of Wilson F. Grimes and Mary C. Weigle, in 1911. Mary McErn died on 9 January 1944 at age 52 years, 11 months and 1 day. She was buried Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania County, Virginia.
