Tribute to the Memory of a Noble Christian Lady of Hepburnville. No doubt many readers of this paper were a few days ago stricken in sorrow when reading that Mrs. Barbara Miller, of Hepburnville, formerly of Bloomingrove, was no more. Sad at heart to think that one once so cheering, kind and true, when living in the midst of relatives and friends, so capable of advising minds, both young and old, with a spirit a fresh for the furtherance of all that was good and noble, should be called away. Ah, to see those once bright eyes now closed, the lips cold, no more to utter the good impulses of a warm heart; yes the very countenance, pale and lifeless, was heartrending, for she was mother, grandmother, toward many. Unforgotten will she be in the minds of those who had the pleasure of knowing her and being conversant with her amiable qualities, always loving and pleasing in disposition, united so visibly with that virtue and kindness, the first of Christian duties. She passes away at the golden age of 84 years, 4 months and 4 days, her end a blissful slumber.
The introductory funeral services were held Sunday, January 18, at her home, which was with her son Abraham Miller, Hepburnville. After singing by the choir followed a fervent prayer by the pastor, Rev. Tilgner, then took all took a farewell look upon one who became endeared to all, who lay in a handsome casket bearing the simple inscription, 'Our Mother', also a sheaf of wheat and floral offerings were designedly displayed to the taste of the deceased, when the pall bearers, Messrs, Schafer, Ulmer, Hayes and Jamison,
conveyed the remains to the hearse and thence they wound their way to the 'city of the dead' in Bloomingrove, where they laid her beside her husband, Jacob F. Miller, who preceded her just a decade of time. After a very short service at the grave the many relatives and friends proceeded to the church
nearby and concluded with the usual services appropriate to the occasion.
Pastor Tilgner took his text from Psalm 17 Chapter, 15 verse, and was assisted by Rev. Eisenmenger, of Warrensville, and Rev. Rutter, of Williamsport, all of whom paid a high tribute to the departed one, upholding
her noble life as an example and a model to be enshrined upon the memory of all.
Her life was noble;
Her end was peace;
Her works do follow;
Her teachings never cease. She This family is listed as 'Family Q3' on the Blooming Grove, Stammbaum Wäldchen (Family Tree Little Woods) that was originally printed about 1860 - 1862. The one used for this record is currently in the possession of Frederick and Zella Stablerrr. The Blooming Grove Historical Socitey also has one on display at their musuem. The beginning reads, 'With approximately 20 family trees of families who largely live in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania and who still have living parents at the turn of the century, mostly from Mühringen and Eßlingen in Würtemberg, and who have moved here.'.'.'.'
Barbara was born while her family was immigrating to America in 1806. She appeared on the census of 1850 at Hepburn Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. She appears in portrait of the Miller "grandparents" circa 1880. "Grandfather Miller and Grandmother Miller. She died in 1890 at the age of 84. Grandfather died ten years earlier at the age of 82," was handwritten on the back by Susie Kurtz Silliman, their granddaughter.8
