Frank Ellsworth Lawrence was born on 3 January 1894 at Salamanca, Cattaraugus County, New York.1,2,3 He was the son of Frank Lawrence and Leota DeHaven. Frank Ellsworth Lawrence married, at age 26, Laura Denmead in December 1920.2,3,4 Frank Ellsworth Lawrence died on 5 July 1995 at age 101 years, 6 months and 2 days.1,2,3 He was buried on 10 July 1995 in the Tallmadge Cemetery, located in Tallmadge, Summit County, Ohio. Mr. Lawrence was born on Seneca Indian lands in upstate New York and came to Tallmadge to live with his grandfather in 1899 at the age of 5. He graduated from Tallmadge High School in 1912 and saw service in the Army in France during World War I.
When Tallmadge American Legion Post 255 was chartered in 1944, Mr. Lawrence was installed as the post's first commander.
Mr. Lawrence's wife, Tallmadge native Laura Denmead, died last year at the age of 98. She was also a 1912 graduate of Tallmadge High. They had been married 74 years.
Mr. Lawrence attended Hammel Business College and the University of Akron. He was a buyer for Summit Wholesale Grocery, retiring in 1944. He then sold real estate and life insurance for the Howell-Viggers agency, retiring for the second time in 1977 at the age of 83.
In 1984, the Historical Society published his book, About Old Tallmadge. Mr. Lawrence was a member of the Tallmadge United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Tallmadge school board. He was a member of the Ohio Genealogical Society and qualified for membership in Ohio's First Families through his great-grandfather, John B. DeHaven, who came to the state in 1817. Mr. Lawrence had donated his historical papers to the Tallmadge branch of the Akron-Summit County Public Library, where a room is named in his honor.
Mr. Lawrence leaves a son, Frank C. Lawrence of Tallmadge; a daughter, Marjorie Hennings of Worthington; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Hennessy-Bagnoli funeral home, where friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday. He graduated from the Tallmadge Center School Class of 1912, and attended Hammel Actual Business College and later Akron University. Mr. Lawrence served with the U.S. Army in France during World War I, then married Laura Denmead in 1920, with whom he celebrated 73 years of marriage in December 1993, before she passed away in August 1994.
Mr. Lawrence served as the first commander of Tallmadge American Legion Post 255, served on the Tallmadge School Board during the 1940s, and was a life member of the Tallmadge United Methodist Church and the Tallmadge Alumni Association. He was the honorary historian of Tallmadge and donated his collection on the history of Tallmadge to the Tallmadge Library, where a room has been named in his honor. He also was honored as the Tallmadge Citizen of the Year in 1989. He first retired from the Summit Wholesale Grocery in 1944, and then sold insurance for the Howell-Viggers Corp., again retiring, at the age of 83, in 1977.
He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and James Henninge of Glouster, Ohio; son and daughter-in-law, Frank C. and Ruth Lawrence of Tallmadge; grandchildren, Linda Lawrence of Washington, D.C., Robert Henninge of Millfield, Ohio, Richard Henninge of Germany, Margaret Calhoun of Cleveland, Paul Henninge of Burlington, Vt., and James Y. Henninge of Athens, Ohio; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services at 11 a.m. Monday at the Hennessy-Bagnoli Funeral Home, 339 Southwest Ave., with Rev. Gary N. Glazer and Dr. H. George Myers officiating. Burial at Tallmadge Cemetery.
