     Shirley Ruth Hicks was born on 14 December 1926 at Pennsdale, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.3 She was the daughter of Walter C. Hicks and Mabel Coffman.3 Shirley Ruth Hicks married, at age 20, Elmer Calvin Stabler, age 21, son of Irvin William Stabler and Margaret Esther Kurtz, on Thursday, 26 June 1947 at Warrensville Evangelical United Brethren Church, Warrensville, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, by the Reverend George Miller.1,2,3,4 Shirley Ruth Hicks died on 18 December 2009 at Montoursville, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, at age 83 years and 4 days.3 She was buried on 23 December 2009 in the Montoursville Cemetery, located in Montoursville, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. The funeral service was officiated by Pastor Connie A. Waugh.3
     Shirley Ruth Hicks graduated in 1944 from Muncy High School, located in Muncy, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.3 She was employed by GTE Sylvania Montoursville, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1,3 She was widowed at age 82 by the death of Elmer on 25 April 2009.2,3 Her obituary was published on 20 December 2009 in the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, printed in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Her obituary stated:

     Shirley R. Stabler, 83, of 3331 Kehrer Hill Road, Montoursville, passed away Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at home surrounded by her family.

     She was born on Dec. 14, 1926 in Pennsdale, the daughter of the late Walter C. and Mabel (Coffman) Hicks.

     On June 26, 1947, she married Elmer Calvin Stabler. They celebrated 61 years together until his death on April 25, 2009.

     A 1944 graduate of Muncy High School, she previously worked for GTE Sylvania in Montoursville. She also worked at the former Bryfogle's in Muncy. In addition, she was a floral arranger for the House of Flowers in Hughesville and Rose Wood Flowers in Muncy.

     Shirley was a devoted member of Heilman United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She actively served in many church activities and in various capacities. Shirley also served on the election committee for Mill Creek Twp. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, playing piano, baking pies, making crafts and flower arranging. She was a mother or friend to all who knew her.

     Surviving are four sons, David P. (Emma) Stabler of Circleville, NY, Douglas A. (Judy) Stabler of Huntersville, William I. (Donna) Stabler of Summerville, SC, and Michael E. Stabler of Huntersville; one sister, Eleanor R. Hicks of Muncy; nine grandchildren, Rodney, Linda, Erin, Sean, Tara, Christopher, Gregory, Taylor, and Brandon; and six great-grandchildren, Alex, Breanna, Chase, Austin, Brandy, and Logan.

     In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters.

     The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, at Heilman United Methodist Church, 2792 Kehrer Hill Road, Montoursville. Officiating will be her minister, Pastor Connie A. Waugh. Burial will follow in Montoursville Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Grenoble's, 121 S. Main St., Muncy.
