Samuel Sholder was born in April 1837 at farm of Christian (Scholderer) Sholder, Lycoming Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.3 He was the son of Christian August Scholderer and Anna Margareta Lutscher.4,2 Samuel Sholder married Mary Ann Creasey, daughter of Adam Crecy and Elizabeth Flexer, circa 1865. Samuel Sholder died on 12 February 1920 at Newberry, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, at age 82 years and 10 months. He was buried on 15 February 1920 in the Wildwood Cemetery, located in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.

His occupation is listed as labor.8 Samuel Sholder began military service on 15 February 1865 as a part of the Pennsylvania Twenty-Eighth Regiment, Company G with the rank of private serving the Union Army during the end of the Civil War. He ended military service on 18 July 1865 at Washington, District of Columbia. He and Mary Ann Creasey appeared on the census of 5 July 1870 at Old Lycoming Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Samuel Sholder and Mary Ann Creasey appeared on the census of 16 June 1880 at Old Lycoming Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. As of 1900, Samuel Sholder and Mary Ann Creasey lived at 220 Poplar Street, Newberry, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.7 Samuel Sholder appeared on the census of 8 June 1900 at Williamsport, 7th Ward, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. He became a widower at the age of 65 with the death of Mary on 27 July 1902. Samuel Sholder appeared on the census of 21 April 1910 in the household of Harry C. Goodman and Charlotte Sholder at Williamsport, 1st Ward, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Samuel Sholder appears in family photograph on 24 August 1912 Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. This was taken as a part of a family reunion in which this photograph appeared in the Sunday Grit on 1 September 1912. He appeared on the census of 13 January 1920 at Williamsport, 11th Ward, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. His obituary was published sometime in February 1920 in the local paper, printed in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. His obituary stated:
Shoulder - Samuel Shoulder died at the home of his son at 10:45 o'clock Thursday morning of influenza. The following children survive: Levi, August, Herbert and Arthur. Mr. Shoulder was eighty-two years of age and was a Civil War veteran. He had lived in Newberry all his life. The funeral service will be conducted at the home of his son, August Shoulder, 1503 Scott street, at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon.
