Bessie Alice Whittaker was born on 2 May 1918 at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Bertran Newman Whittaker and Susan Lincoln. Bessie Alice Whittaker married, at age 20, William Kenneth Palmer, age 24 on Sunday, 25 December 1938. Bessie Alice Whittaker died on 18 June 2005 at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, Iowa, at age 87 years, 1 month and 16 days.
She was widowed at age 61 by the death of William on 15 October 1979. Bessie Alice "Betty" Palmer, 87, of Grinnell, died Saturday, June 18, 2005, at Friendship Manor in Grinnell.
The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 23 at First Friends Church in Grinnell, with Pastor Todd Follette officiating. Burial will be in Westfield Cemetery near Grinnell. Memorials have been established for Grinnell First Friends Church and Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends Capital Campaign - Leadership Fund and can be sent; c/o Smith Funeral home, P.O. Survivors include three sons, David Palmer of Grinnell, Dennis Palmer of Aledo, Ill., and Tom Palmer of Salem; a daughter, Mary Ann Coppinger of Oskaloosa; and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, William Kenneth Palmer, she was preceded in death by two sisters. Her obituary was published on 22 June 2005 in the The Hawk Eye, printed in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa. Her obituary stated:
