William Rufus Dixon was born on 17 April 1817 at Kanawha County, Virginia. He was the son of Peter Dixon and Lucy Long. William Rufus Dixon married, at age 30, Emily Caroline Mitchell on Thursday, 16 December 1847. William Rufus Dixon married, at age 42, Harriet Johnson on Thursday, 12 April 1860. William Rufus Dixon died on 29 March 1907 at Fennimore, Grant County, Wisconsin, at age 89 years, 11 months and 12 days.
