James Benton Yoakum was born on 31 January 1849 at Ray County, Missouri. He was the son of Moses Yoakum and Elizabeth Grimes. James Benton Yoakum married, at age 18, Mary Ann Shumate, age 26 on Sunday, 6 October 1867. James Benton Yoakum died on 7 November 1918 at age 69 years, 9 months and 6 days.
He became a widower at the age of 57 with the death of Mary on 20 April 1906.
