John Updegraff1

     John Updegraff was born on 9 March 1839.1 He was the son of Uriah Updegraff and Ann Covode.1 John Updegraff married, at age 40, Elizabeth Peeples, age 23 on Thursday, 28 August 1879.1 John Updegraff died in 1920 at age 80 years.1
     John enlisted as a Private in August of 1863 in Cavalry Troop B for six months. He re-enlisted in August of 1864 in the 211th Penna. Vol. and saw active duty for a year. He was in the battle of Fort Steadman and also Petersburg, in which he was wounded on 2 April 1865, resulting in the loss of his left arm. After the war he returned home and began farming. He served as Township Justice of the Peace for one term, School Director for three terms and taught school for two terms. He resided in Pittsburgh, PA where he had extensive real estate interests.
