Alexander Smith Updegraff was born on 25 December 1828 at Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of William Updegraff and Rachel Smith.1 Alexander Smith Updegraff married, at age 26, Jane Ann Walton, age 25, daughter of George Walton and Martha Sutton, on Wednesday, 18 July 1855.1 Alexander Smith Updegraff died on 11 January 1908 at Osborne Township, Sumner County, Kansas, at age 79 years and 17 days.1 He was buried in the Osborne Cemetery, located in Osborne County, Kansas.1
Alexander and his wife are listed in the 1850 Census in Newton Township, Jasper County, Indiana, and in the 1870 Census in Center Township, Decatur County, Ohio, then for the 1880 and 1900 censuses they were in Osborne Township, Sumner County, Kansas.1 He was a harness maker, farmer and shoemaker.1
