Joseph Alva Updegraff was born on 17 July 1887.1 He was the son of David Updegraff and Harriet R. Harris. Joseph Alva Updegraff married, at age 20, Anna Mazie Plotts, daughter of G. H. Plotts and Margaret [—?—], on Wednesday, 3 June 1908 at Montoursville, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, by the Reverend W. C. Dunlap.1 Joseph Alva Updegraff died on 1 November 1918 at age 31 years, 3 months and 15 days.1
He and Anna Mazie Plotts were killed in an automobile accident in 1918. A Petition for Guardian by a minor under fourteen in Orphan's Court, Lycoming County, PA - Book #30, page 11 - made on 30 December 1918 for Paul A., Elwood and Margaret, by their Uncle C. Owen Fry.1
