William Edward Updegraff1

     William Edward Updegraff was born on 8 September 1937 at Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of Clayton Edward Updegraff and Gertrude Ellen Bauder. William Edward Updegraff married, at age 25, Carol Louise Courter, daughter of Franklin Thomas Courter and Dorothy Jane Clark, on Saturday, 20 July 1963 at Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.2 William Edward Updegraff died on 15 June 2002 at age 64 years, 9 months and 7 days.1 He was buried in the Church of Christ Cemetery, located in Blanchard, Liberty Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania.
     William received his B.S. from Dickinson College in 1959, M.S. from Penn State in 1962 and Ph.D. from Ohio University in 1969 - Physics. He was a teacher from 1969 - 1974 at Simpson College, Iowa; Director of Academic Computing, Suny College, Buffalo, NY and is presently (1987) Director of Computing Services at Wittenberg University.

His obituary was published on 25 June 2002 in the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, printed in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. His obituary stated:

     Dr. William E. Updegraff, 64, of Glennallen, Alaska, died unexpectedly Saturday, June 15, 2002 in Glennallen. Bill, a son of Clayton E. and Gertrude Bauder Updegraff, was born Sept. 8, 1937, in Williamsport. On July 20, 1963, he married the former Carol Louise Courter in Williamsport.

     Bill was a graduate of Williamsport High School, Dickinson College of Carlisle, The Pennsylvania State University with a M.S. in Physics, and Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, with a Ph.D. in Physics. His career included various teaching and administrative positions at Lycoming College; Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa; New York State University College, Buffalo, N.Y; Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio; and Ripon College, Ripon, Wisconsin. After his retirement in 1999, Bill and Carol moved to Glennallen, where Bill volunteered as Administrator for Computing Services at Alaska Bible College.

     Bill was a member and former elder of Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Ripon, Wisconsin. He and Carol have been a part of the Copper Center Community Chapel, Copper Center, Alaska, since arriving in Glennallen.

     In addition to being a fine, loving husband and father, Bill was a good friend to many. He enjoyed singing, building campfires, tplayingA with his computer, and, more recently, searching for his trootsA as a fledgling genealogist. He will be sadly missed, but his faith was strong and Heaven is his home now.

     Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Christine (Tony) DeZarn, Castle Rock, Colorado, Jane Updegraff of Beaver Creek, Ohio; son, Thomas E. Updegraff of Chicago, Illinois; granddaughter, Alexis DeZarn; sisters, Lucile (Ralph) Wright of Lancaster, Ruth (Milton) House of Mifflinburg, and Jean Hecker of Lewisburg and formerly of Anchorage, Alaska; brother-in-law, Franklin (Donna) Courter of Blanchard; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

     A memorial service was held at the Copper Center Community Chapel, on Thursday, June 20. Another memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Calvary United Methodist Church, 1400 W. Fourth St., Williamsport, with the Rev. Russel Moldovan officiating. Burial will be in the Church of Christ Cemetery, Blanchard, at the family s convenience.

     In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Bill s memory to Alaska Bible College Building Fund, P.O. Box 289, Glennallen, AK 99588-0289.
