Clayton Edward Updegraff was born on 16 September 1897 at Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of John Oliver Updegraff and Fannie Steinhelper. Clayton Edward Updegraff married Gertrude Ellen Bauder, daughter of Charles William Bauder and Olive Finch, circa 1924 at Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.2 Clayton Edward Updegraff died on 1 April 1974 at Sumter, Sumter County, South Carolina, at age 76 years, 6 months and 16 days.1 He was buried on 4 April 1974 in the Mound Cemetery, located in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1

Clayton E. Updegraff, 76, of Landisville, formerly of this city, died in Sumter, S.C., today, Monday, April 1, 1974. He was visiting a daughter, Mrs. Ruth A. House, when he was stricken.
Mr. Updegraff operated a furniture store on Cemetery Street for 37 years and was a retired salesman of the Williamsport Refrigeration Co.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church.
He served as Republican committeeman for the 10th Ward for many years.
He was born in Lycoming County on September 16, 1897, a son of John O. and Fannie Steinhilper Updegraff.
Surviving, besides Mrs. House, are two other daughters, Mrs. Lucille M. Wright, of Landisville, with whom he lived, and Mrs. Jean L. Hecker, of Chicago, Ill; a son, Dr. William E., of Indianola, Iowa; a sister, Mrs. Golden Batens, of this city, 16 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Knight's, 1914 Memorial Avenue, with the Rev. Carl F. Peterson, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
