Helen Gertrude Updegraff was born on 2 July 1917 at Latexo, Houston County, Texas.1 She was the daughter of Clarence Ezra Updegraff and Blanche F. Leedy.1 Helen Gertrude Updegraff married, at age 24, Carl Louis Balzer, age 27, son of Louis Balzer and Mary [—?—], on Friday, 11 July 1941 at Lutheran Parsonage, Winchester, Winchester County, Virginia, by the Reverend Carl Honeycutt. Helen Gertrude Updegraff died on 31 March 2005 at age 87 years, 8 months and 29 days.
Her obituary was published on 2 April 2005 in the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, printed in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Her obituary stated:
Helen G. Balzer, 87, of 1033 Arnold St., died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at the Williamsport Home following a brief illness.
Her husband, Carl L. Sr., died July 9, 1978.
Helen had worked at Leeser Shoe Store, formerly Mary Lou’s Shoe’s, in Newberry. She graduated from Williamsport High School in 1935, was a member of the Newberry Lioness club, a recipient of the meritorious support award of the Lions of PA in 1999 and enjoyed gardening and cooking.
Born July 2, 1917, in Texas, she was the daughter of Clarence and Blanche Leedy Updegraff.
Surviving are her sons, Carl L. Jr. (Judy) of Linden and Thomas E. (Betty) of DuBoistown; a daughter, Jane L. (Charles) Adams-Delp of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Peter and Gretchen Gerhardt, Jennifer Adams, Christopher Balzer Adams, Joseph Kyle and Ellie Hubbard; and four great-grandchildren.
Helen was predeceased by brothers, Claire, William, Charles, George and Clarence Updegraff, and sisters, Dorothy Bodle, Irene Raines and Blanche Updegraff.
A private family funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave., with the Rev. John E. Charnock Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Family and friends are invited from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests donations be made to the Newberry Lioness Club, c/o Helen Dgien, 1238 Rural Ave., Williamsport.
