Christian and Anna Sholder moved to Lycoming County, in 1838 purchasing land from George Bussler located in Lycoming Township. It is not known when this log cabin was built or even if it is the original log cabin that was on the land when it was originally purchased. Ernest DeRemer purchased this property and cabin at some point in the later part of the 20th century. Then sometime in the late 1990’s the decaying structure was purchased by Wilbur “Bill” Vaughn, Jr. who was restoring it when these images were taken in 2001. Bill moved the log cabin from its original location on Sholder Road to where it now sits on Bottle Run Road. Bill passed away in 2002 not able to complete the work on this for him and his wife. Vernice allowed tours of the mostly restored cabin in 2004 for the first all Sholder family reunion.
In 1858 the original farm land was in then Lycoming Township which was divided into half, the lower half being referred to as Old Lycoming Township and the upper half remaining Lycoming Township. The Sholder homestead was as of 1858 located in Old Lycoming Township. At some point this farm was next owned by Christian and Anna’s eldest son Christian Sholder and wife Leah Sechrist according to page 1135 of the History of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania by John F. Meginness.
When visiting Bill and his wife Vernice A. Fenstermaker in 2001 Bill relayed ghost stories about an old woman sitting in a rocking chair looking out the windows above the porch. It is not known who this woman was only that she was old. Anna Margareta (Lutscher) Sholder died at the age of 74 and her mother, Katharina Barbara (Reiser) Lutscher, who lived with Christian and Anna according to the 1860 Census, died in her 90’s. I’ll make a leap here and guess that the “ghost” is Katharina, the mother-in-law of Christian [Scholderer] Sholder. Just a guess.
