Monroe K. Lukens was born on 8 October 1922 at Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1,2 He was the son of Thompson Lukens and Anna Sholder.2 Monroe K. Lukens married, at age 39, Jane E. Swartz on Friday, 15 June 1962.2 Monroe K. Lukens died on 25 December 2005 at age 83 years, 2 months and 17 days.1,2 A memorial service for Monroe K. Lukens was held at the Spitler Funeral Home, Montoursville, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, on 28 December 2005 at 11 a.m.2
Monroe K. Lukens was also known as Mike.2 He appeared on the census of 10 April 1930 in the household of Arthur M. Sholder at Williamsport, 11th Ward, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. His obituary was published on 27 December 2005 in the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, printed in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. His obituary stated:
Monroe K. “Mike” Lukens, 83, of 55 Jack’s Road, Montoursville, died of heart failure Christmas Day, Sunday, Dec. 25, 2005.
Lukens was born in Williamsport on Oct. 8, 1922, the son of Thompson Lukens and Anna Sholder Lukens.
He and his wife, the former Jane E. Swartz, were married June 15, 1962.
He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees in the South Pacific during World War II, and was a member of American Legion Post 104 in Montoursville, and VFW Post 3428 in Muncy.
He worked for the Reading Railroad and later retired after a 20-year career with the Montoursville Area School District.
Throughout his life, he was an avid sportsman who hunted, fished and participated in fast-pitch softball, as both player and manager on local city league teams. He was one of the few pitchers in the league to play without a glove, bare-handing line drives as well as more routine fielding from the mound.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his stepchildren, Catharine J. Haas of Montoursville; Timothy C. Hass of Williamsport and Thomas A. Reed of College Park, Md.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at the Spitler Funeral Home in Montoursville.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in the name of the deceased be made to the American Heart Association.2 According to the Social Security Administrations Death Index Monroe's last known residence was Montoursville, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1
