William Yoakum was born on 27 December 1788 at Greenbrier County, Virginia. He was the son of George I. Yoakum and Martha VanBebber. William Yoakum married, at age 35, Sarah Simmons on Monday, 3 May 1824. William Yoakum married, at age 79, Letitia Rice in January 1868. William Yoakum died in 1880 at age 91 years.
